[(Title)] Commonwealth Games Queen's baton relay cost exceeded $6.4 million

Taxpayers contributed millions of dollars towards the Commonwealth Games baton relay, with organisers racking up a fortune in bills for food, accommodation and a party at Buckingham Palace.

Figures obtained under a right to information request show the cost of logistics for the 388-day relay was more than $6.4 million — and that did not include wages for staff, police and security.

According to the official Queen's Baton Relay website, selected baton bearers were "responsible for any accommodation, food and transportation costs to and from the location where they have been selected to carry the baton".

Michael Cooney from the Australian Republic Movement said the costs appeared excessive.

GOLDOC chief executive Mark Peters said corporate sponsorships helped "offset" some of the costs, but the exact amount of support remained "commercial in confidence".

GOLDOC's most recently published annual report, for 2016-17, showed Queensland Government grants made up $171 million of its $179 million in income.

The report said the majority of its sponsorship revenue would be received in 2017-18, during the financial year when the Games were held on the Gold Coast.

Mr Peters said the baton relay "reached millions of people around the world".
