The Quinnipaic poll shows a deep partisan divide on the issue, with 51 percent of Republicans agreeing with Trump's frequent line, while just 5 percent of Democrats and 24 percent of Independents feeling the same way.

A poll asking the same question from Ipsos on Aug. 7 showed a similar result on the Republican side, with 48 percent of Republicans surveyed saying they believed the media is the people's enemy.

The poll also showed that 44 percent of American voters say that Trump's attacks on the news media will lead to violence against those who work in the industry, with 52 percent saying they aren't worried.

The Quinnipiac poll surveyed 1,175 voters in the U.S. between Aug. 9 and 13, with a margin of error of 3.4 percentage points.
