[(Title)] Man Shoots Pregnant Cow, Sentenced to Prison.

An Alabama man has been sentenced to 57 months in prison for shooting and killing a pregnant cow for no apparent reason.

Byron Jamar Esco, 30, of Prattville, had recently been released from Alabama state prison in late November last year when he was driving along country roads near Hope Hull, Alabama, officials said. Esco was in possession of a 9-millimeter handgun.

Authorities said Esco saw a cow grazing in a field. He likely didn't know, but the cow was pregnant with a calf. With no provocation, Esco his handgun at the grazing cow.

"Esco then fired the weapon and killed the cow, which was pregnant with a calf,"  according to United States Attorney for the Middle District of Alabama Louis V. Franklin, Sr., who issued a release on the crime and conviction.

"Esco drove away," Franklin said. "Before he could do so, though, the cow's owner observed Esco's vehicle and reported the shooting and the details of the getaway vehicle to law enforcement authorities.

Early the following morning, a sheriff's deputy found Esco driving the car. Inside the vehicle was the handgun used in the shooting."

Esco was sentenced this week to 57 months in prison because he has previous felony offenses, making it unlawful for him to possess a firearm.

The Alabama grand jury charged him as being a felon in possession of a firearm, and he pled guilty to the crime. He was further charged with killing cattle livestock, which is illegal in Alabama.

"We often assume that gun violence is a problem that exists only on city streets,"  said Franklin.  "Sadly, even a rural area can be the scene of needless violence, as this case demonstrates.
