A 9-year-old boy killed himself rather than suffer one more day of bullying at his school.

In mid-August, Colorado fourth-grader Jamel Myles told his mother he was gay and wanted to be open about his sexuality to classmates. With his mother's approval, Jamel started classes at Shoemaker Elementary School by telling his classmates.

But he was dead in less than a week's time from relentless taunting.

On Aug. 23, Jamel's mother discovered his body inside their Denver home. The cause of death has not been released but Denver Police confirmed it was a suicide.

"Four days is all it took at school,"  Jamel's mother, Leia Pierce, told TV station KDVR.  "My son told my oldest daughter the kids at school told him to kill himself. I'm just sad he didn't come to me."

Jamel also had confided in his mom that he wanted to wear more feminine clothing.

Pierce hopes to spread awareness about the dangers of bullying and making parents responsible for their kids' behavior.

"I think the parent should be held (accountable) because obviously the parents are either teaching them be like that, or they're treating them like that,"  said Pierce.
