Toyota wants to help build a self-driving car.

The car company invested $500 million in Uber Monday  "with the aim of advancing and bringing to market autonomous ride-sharing as a mobility service at scale."

"Combining efforts with Uber, one of the predominant global ride-sharing and automated driving R&D companies, could further advance future mobility,"  Shigeki Tomoyama, executive vice president of TMC and president of Toyota Connected Co.,

Uber will load a fleet of Toyota minivans with its self-driving technology, as well as Toyota's safety software. Passengers can call the self-driving cars using Uber's traditional service.

The pilot program is planned for 2021.

"The deal is the first of its kind for Uber, and signals our commitment to bringing world-class technologies to the Uber network,"  Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said in a statement.

The safety of Uber's self-driving technology has been a stop-and-go undertaking, especially after one of its cars hit and killed a woman in Arizona in March.

Uber also faces competition from Google's own self-driving cars.
