A British woman who survived a horror traffic accident has told how she recalls seeing herself 'free from the car and running in fields' as emergency service workers cut her from the wreckage.

Emily Pringle, 42, from Cheltenham, sustained a catalogue of horrific injuries during a head-on road collision that left her 'looking like the bionic woman'.

Now she's urging people to donate blood after herself receiving five life-saving transfusions in the wake of the near-fatal accident.

She says she is 'lucky to be here' after suffering a fractured vertebrae, ribs and broken pelvis following the horror smash on July 12, and it is only thanks to blood donors that she is here today.

The mother-of-one was driving in Cheltenham when her Audi collided with another vehicle at a combined speed of 120mph, leaving her car a twisted wreck of metal.

After 17 broken bones and five transfusions, she was left in such a fragile state that it was two days before surgeons could stabilise her enough to operate, and she was in and out of consciousness for two days.

Emily, a sales assistant who has been driving for 25 years and had never had an accident before, suffered a ruptered carotid artery - which alone carries a high death rate - along with a perforated spleen and liver, plus internal bleeding.

Emily was due to start a new job on the day of the crash and left the house just after 9am to meet a friend for a coffee when the accident took place.

She recalled: 'I remember driving down East End Road, and turning onto the A40 by the service station in Charlton Kings. And that's it, no proper memory after that of my journey.

'I saw headlights, and that was it. The car was spinning, round and round and round and round. I wasn't breathing.

'I know I wasn't breathing because I could see myself... weird as that sounds to anyone who is reading this. When I stop spinning I'll breathe.... The car stopped spinning eventually, after what felt like an eternity... And I didn't breathe.'

After spotting the other car through her window, Emily reached for her phone to call the police before realising that her middle torso felt 'odd'. She had no idea of the extent of her injuries initially.

Emily remembers asking a passerby how long it would be until paramedics arrived, before 'blacking out'.

She was in and out of consciousness as fire brigade members cut her out of the car after discovering that the door was jammed.

At one point, she remembers dreaming that she was 'free from the car and running in fields'.

'I dreamt that I was free from the car and running in fields,' says Emily, who trapped for an hour and a half, and was later told she had received two blood transfusions at the scene.

Emily and the other driver were both seriously injured and taken to hospital in Bristol to be treated, with Emily being rushed to the Emergency Department.

Soon after, her partner Neil and her mother were able to visit.

She said: 'I'll make as full a recovery as can be expected physically. I'm phenomenally lucky.

'I'll never run a marathon, but I will be able to walk again. I'll be in pain for the rest of my life, and this is likely to be significant at certain times of the year [such as during] cold weather.'

She is now on the mend, back on the road and plans to return to work part-time when she is well enough.

'I have, so far, exceeded all expectations of those around me and the professionals. I can weight-bear on my feet and legs now, through crutches, so can drive.

'I will never forget the injuries that I've sustained, the impact on those that I love, the pain I and others have been in and are in still, and mostly the 12th July 2018.

'But I feel phenomenally lucky that I am still here, and that I will get to see my little girl grow up. Some don't. I literally think about this every day. My little girl is my world. By rights, I shouldn't be here.'

Emily's upcoming book is being sold to raise money for the Air Ambulance and NHS Blood Donation.
