Volkswagen confirmed on Thursday that it's sending the iconic Beetle to the proverbial scrap yard in 2019 — nearly seven decades after it first hit first American highways and byways.

The German-based automaker blamed declining sales for pulling the plug on the Bug. The company sold just over 15,000 of the famous model in 2017, down 3.2 percent from the previous year.

The desire for larger vehicles was also cited by experts as a factor.

"In this environment, the business case for cars in general, and small cars in particular, becomes increasingly difficult to justify,"  said Karl Brauer, executive publisher of Kelley Blue Book and Autotrader.  "Anyone surprised or disappointed by this announcement better prepare themselves. In the months to come more automakers will be announcing more iconic model cancellations."

While the company hasn't ruled out reinstating the model at some point in the future, Beetle aficionados yearning for one last brand-new vehicle will have two special models to choose from — the Final Edition SEL and Final Edition SE.
