[(Title)] 'Gay cake': It was about the message, not a man.

The owners of a bakery did not discriminate against a customer by refusing to make a cake supporting gay marriage, the Supreme Court has ruled.

Christian couple Daniel and Amy McArthur, who run Belfast-based Ashers Baking Company, told activist Gareth Lee they would not make the cake featuring Sesame Street puppets and the logo of campaign group Queerspace.

Ashers Baking Company in Belfast would have refused to decorate a cake with the slogan "Support Gay Marriage", whoever had ordered it.

And the bakery owners would have gladly baked a cake for their customer so long as its message did not conflict with their Christian beliefs.

According to the district judge who first heard his claim, Mr Lee was perceived by the bakery to be a gay man or someone who was associated with the gay community.

But Lady Hale said support for changing the law in Northern Ireland was not confined to gay people.

In Northern Ireland, it can be illegal to discriminate against people because of their political opinions.

Daniel and Amy McArthur say their Christian beliefs affect "every part of our lives, including running our business".

The Equality Commission for Northern Ireland, which backed Mr Lee, argued that the message on the cake was associated with his support for law reform.

But, said the Supreme Court, the bakery owners had rights to freedom of religion and freedom of speech.
